Strike

Sergei Eisenstein's "Strike," with Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane," mark the most outstanding cinematic debuts in the history of film. Triggered by the suicide of a worker unjustly accused of theft, a strike is called by the laborers of a Moscow factory. The managers, owner and the Czarist government dispatch infiltrators in an attempt to break the workers unity. Unsuccessful, they hire the police and, in the film's most harrowing and powerful sequences, the unarmed strikers are slaughtered in a brutal confrontation. This edition of "Strike" is digitally remastered from a mint-condition 35mm print made from the original camera negative and features new digital stereo music composed and performed by the Alloy Orchestra. Special Features: Audio Commentary by Russian cinema scholar Yuri Tsivian

Captain Fracasse

Recently recovered and restored, here is one of the best films you've never heard of. This lavish, action-filled, poignant, and extremely cinematic adventure/romance follows the episodic adventures of a chivalrous noble (Pierre Blanchar) traveling incognito, and a dastardly duke ("Algiers'" Charles Boyer) pursuing innocent damsel Lien Deyers in the basest manner. Highway robbers, swordfights, disguises, and the very long arm of coincidence spice up this colorful, lively romp in the vein of "The Three Musketeers." Digitally mastered from a beautiful 35mm tinted print and featuring new English titles, this recovered classic recently premiered to great acclaim in Europe and now prepares to swashbuckle its way onto DVD! Chaplin Mutuals Volume 1

Charlie Chaplin was the biggest star in film when he signed with the Mutual Company in 1916 for the then-unheard-of sum of $670,000. The twelve films he made for Mutual reflect Chaplin's attempt to use comedy not just as a series of gags, but as a search for genuine, universal truths. Digitally mastered from early generation 35mm negatives, these works provide considerable testimony to Chaplin's skills as both a comedian and a filmmaker. This volume includes the shorts: "The Immigrant," "The Adventurer," "The Cure" and "Easy Street" (all 1917). Also includes new digital stereo scores by Michael Mortilla.

Regeneration/ Young Romance

"The first full-length gangster picture ever made" according to its director, Raoul Walsh, who would later make "The Roaring Twenties," "High Sierra," "The Bowery" and "White Heat." "Regeneration" (72 min.) is a powerful slum melodrama produced in 1915 on location in the lower east side of New York City, with a gaggle of authentic low-life types performing alongside professional actors. "Regeneration" is in the Library of Congress National Registry of essential American films. As an added bonus on this DVD, "Young Romance" (58 min.), also released in 1915, is a recent rediscovery that forever silences the claim that refined comedy cannot be conveyed via the screen. This disguise plot, worthy of an Elizabethan drama, was written by William deMille (brother of Cecil, father of Agnes), and directed by George Melford ("The Sheik," the Spanish "Dracula").
